Searching For Your First Job

Posted by ranger to General

Looking for your first job (or your tenth job, for that matter!) can be quite intimidating.  Where do you begin?  There are a number of tools that you can use to help you through the process, many of which you may not have already considered.

First, use your degree and your university to the maximum that you can do so!  Go back to the career counseling services at the university and look at the job postings that they have.  Join your alumni directory and send direct emails and letters to people who are in fields that you’d like to be part of.  Ask fellow alumni to meet with you informally just so that you can garner ideas from their experience.  People love to talk about themselves and most people will be open to meeting with you in this forum.

Get online for networking as well.  Join Facebook and LinkedIn and use them as networking tools.  Look at online message boards for job possibilities.

Finally, start talking, talking, talking.  Tell everyone that you know that you’re looking for a job and make sure that you are specific as possible about your qualifications and your field of interest.  Network with everyone – you never know who will lead you to the path of employment!
